Gears! Gears! Gears! Movin' Monkeys - Review

The exciting new arrival in our house this week was Gears! Gears! Gears! Movin' Monkeys™ from Learning Resources®

Although it says on the box that this is suitable for children of 4+, this was recommended to us for BB, a boy who has loved wheels since he first saw one turn, so we thought we would give it a try.

The general principal of it is that you construct on the interlocking bases and then you can use a handle to turn the bits around and the interconnected gears can make everything move. Monkeys hang and swing and dance as the cogs turn. BB, my sister and I were all hooked from the moment we opened the box.

At first we took it all out of the box and just started playing free style

Then after a while , whilst they were busy playing I decided to look at the leaflet in the box. I saw that it was like Lego in that there was a specific design, with detailed instructions for making it up. I had to give it a go!

We managed to make it without too many issues - the hardest part really was that we didn't pay attention to the way the base was when we made each part - so sometimes they didn't fit together at the right angle and we had to re do a piece, but we learned from our mistake.

Unfortunately our set was missing one of the tree tops
Unfortunately our set was missing one of the tree tops - that is assuming everything in the picture on the box was supposed to be inside. This won't be a big deal - it still works, everything still turns, and we will probably never construct it to that format ever again.

BB is a bit young to construct this by himself - but he can put bits together, hang the monkeys on and turn the wheels - see the video on our Facebook page, and he loves it. Its a great thing for us to play with together right now and will undoubtedly keep him amused for years to come.

The Gears! Gears! Gears! Movin' Monkeys™ are currently for sale on the Learning Resources®  website for £38.95 + VAT. There are other sets available too, such as a farm and a sea set, as well as the basic building set - all around a similar price. I would imagine they mix and match quite well, though this one set contains enough pieces to keep one child adequately entertained without the need for additions.

Like all the Learning Resources® toys we have reviewed so far, these are of excellent quality and have heaps of potential for open ended, creative play. I have no doubt that this will be a favourite with us both (and my sister when she visits) for years to come.
